You're about to cruise down the 101 or cross the Bay Bridge, but before you grab the keys, make sure you've got your license. The state of California requires all drivers to maintain a current driver's license in order to operate a motor vehicle. Driving without a license in California carries consequences, up to and including hefty fines, vehicle impounding, and even jail time. Read on to learn how to get a California driver’s license or replace or renew one before you drive through the Golden State to avoid those headaches.

How Do I Apply for a New California Driver's License or ID Card?

If you don't have a driver's license from California or another state, California law requires you to apply for an instruction permit before you take the behind-the-wheel test to get your driver's license. To apply for an instructional permit, you'll need the following documents:

  • One document showing proof of identity
  • Two documents showing proof of residence
  • A document with your full legal name
  • Social Security number, though some exceptions may apply

Once you've provided the documentation, you must pay a non-refundable fee and pass both a (driving) knowledge test and a vision test. Afterward, you must pass the behind-the-wheel test to receive your driver's license.

What Are the Steps To Replace a Lost or Stolen California Driver's License or ID Card?

California allows you to request a replacement for a lost or stolen driver's license in one of three ways. First, you can simply request a replacement using the online Driver's License Application. Second, you can request a replacement at a DMV kiosk located in select DMV offices. You simply manually type your info, which is verified by the system, make a payment, and receive a temporary license instantly. Finally, you can request a replacement for a lost or stolen driver's license in person at any state DMV office. The state of California recommends either booking an appointment or using the search feature to see wait times at your local DMV office.

How Can I Renew My California Driver's License or ID Card?

The process to renew a California driver's license online closely mirrors the process to replace a stolen or lost license. You may be eligible to renew your license online if you:

  • Don't need to change any personal info about your address or appearance
  • Are not applying for REAL ID
  • Are not renewing a commercial driver's license

Additionally, in California, you can renew your driver's license in person at your local DMV office. Your local branch may even offer a kiosk that you can use to renew your license without having to wait in a longer line.

California also offers the option to renew your driver's license or identification card by mail, with a few caveats. Your license must not be under any sort of probation or suspension and must be up for renewal within the next 120 days. You also lack eligibility if you hold a driver's license from more than one state or jurisdiction. Likewise, you aren't eligible to renew your commercial driver's license online. Finally, it's important to note you can only renew online two consecutive times, so after 10 years, you'll have to go back to the DMV office in person.

What Documents Are Required for a REAL ID in California?

If you plan to apply for a REAL ID, which will soon be a requirement for domestic air travel, you need to have all the proper documents in order. Thankfully, the state has put together a helpful checklist of California REAL ID requirements. You'll need one proof of identity document, such as a passport, a valid permanent resident card, or a certificate of naturalization. You'll also need to demonstrate proof of California residency using two separate documents. The state prefers a utility or cellphone bill but also accepts mortgage statements, medical bills, deeds, titles, lease agreements, or tax returns. If your bills are in the name of a spouse or family member, you can provide documentation detailing your relationship with the resident.

What Are the Fees for Getting, Replacing, or Renewing a California Driver's License or ID Card?

The cost to get, replace, or renew a California driver's license is not as high as you might think. Under current California law, you can expect to pay $45 for your original driver's license or a license renewal. Taking the behind-the-wheel test carries a $9 fee, so simply deduct the test fee from the renewal cost and you have a replacement total of $36. If you pay in person, the state accepts cash, checks, credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or money orders. Conversely, over the phone, have your card or bank account routing info handy. If you pay by mail, you can use a check or money order.

The prices are similar if you're hoping to replace your regular ID card without driving privileges. Original, replacement (for lost or stolen), and renewals each cost $39. The state of California does offer free ID cards to senior citizens 62 years of age and older. This is true for the original issuance, replacement, or renewal cards.

How Does Having a Valid Driver's License Impact Your Auto Insurance Rates?

Insurance companies usually want to know a little bit about you before they quote a price for premiums. Red flags on your record will warrant higher premiums, so if you have a history of DUIs, speeding, or exhibition driving, be prepared to pay more.

Likewise, carriers will check the status of your driver's license, so you should expect to pay more if your license has been suspended or revoked. By the same token, drivers required to file an SR-22 should expect to see higher premiums, as well.

No matter the status of your license, it's always a good idea to request quotes from multiple carriers. Comparing offers from multiple insurance companies gives you a better sense of the market and helps ensure you find the best value.

Premiums are sourced from over 30,000 zip codes across 200 insurance companies. We estimate premiums based on public filings for policies seeking 50/100 in liability with $500 deductibles for collision and comprehensive coverage. Estimated rates are based on a 35-year-old single female with a good credit score and no history of accidents or violations driving a 2023 Toyota RAV4 LE. We partner with Quadrant Information Services to source our data and assume no unique benefits or discounts are applied for these rates (unless otherwise stated). Your own rates may be different.
